Show HOW ORRIA GOT ITS NAME I 1 my friend kelly of salt late lake with whom I 1 have been out on several fossil I 1 expeditions Is ac quain quainter ted with dan orr who rune runs the orr ranch west of tooele thoele dan ie is well past eighty a typical frontiers man and quite a character he was employed by the late charles D wal cott as teamster in the many edcur walcott took in this neighbor hood in quest of fossils and here Is an on one of those several trips glyen given me first band hand by kel ly to whom orr told it one night in his cabin dan orr was with walcott out there at antelope springs in the ca lacity of teamster but when dan got next to what they were looking tor for he picked up more ments than all the rest put together says he has a faculty of seeing things on the ground he often picks up ar row beads heads from horseback so walcott let some of the other bohunko do the teaming and bad had dan hunt with him walcott found fragments of oria just as we did but they were all incomplete and he elm aim ply couldn coulden t find a whole one so be he gave dan a day oft off and told him to bunt hunt for a complete specimen he promised dan enough chewing to baco to keep him supplied for a year and no inconsiderable quantity at that if it he found one whole so dan got busy spent the whole day OB on that hillside and toned found what he thought was a complete bug be aides sides many good fragments he came in that night and walcott said well you dian didn t find any I 1 looked for or days and I 1 know there I 1 aint any whole ones yea yes I 1 did said dan I 1 let leta s see it then said walcott dan reached in bis his pocket and pull ed out a piece of rock walcott saw instantly that it was what he had been looking tor for but the first thing he said was HOLY SMOKE I 1 dan I 1 I 1 how many times have I 1 told you to always wrap those things up in a handkerchief never carry them loose in your pocket then he took a loolu i at dan a find and began to do an indian dance by god orr that a 8 a beauty he shouted so thereafter it was called orr a beauty or orria delegans El egana egans kelly found a better orria ele gans than I 1 did I 1 sent one in to the smithsonian Smitha onlan for identification and retained one myself a on ly it Is mine and kelly a ambition to find a perfect one some day so orr a beauty is our quest not being either of us satisfied with a fragment only in our display kelly also has one specimen of the r rare named after our marcum mar j urn pass I 1 haven t been that fortunate yet all the more excuse to go back out often A fellow gets a wallop out of those things when he knows me one of the parties FB sr |
