Show HISTORY OF BLACK ROCK black rock Is situated I 1 n the southern part ot of 1111 mallard lard county be tween delta on the north and milford on oil the south ott on tho the east aro are the lofty antelope mountains and on the southwest la Is tho the rich frisco range to tho the northwest lies the cricket range where thousands of head of winter sheep range the earliest record tells of father escalante on october ath about IGO years ago lie he and his men rested at black rock after testing resting tor for three days lie ho continued N northward ort hward going back through spanish fork and on to colorado ile iia had indian guides who knew where to find wa ter the water that comes from the black lava rocks in black rock is clear and pure when the state was waa being settled and freighting was carried on black rock hock wa a common meeting ground where men rested and exchanged information fornia tion about roads and watering places many ot of which dried up during the long dry summers at black rock water could always bo be had it in the spring this valley was flooded by tho the overflow of the deaver beaver river grass grew in abundance the settlers of fellmore and deaver brought their cattle here during the summer families made butter and cheese tor for winter use next the railroad was built thru this valley the supply ot of water came into use and was the main reason for a station being built here for many years there were only three sulphur refineries in the united states twenty two miles east of black rock was the only place in the world where sulphur was both mined and refined in the same place black rock was the nearest R n R point tor for this output black rock was known throughout tho the intermountain west for its sulphur shipments A largo large quantity of pumice was shipped from here to be made into dutch cleanser and other useful products sheep arid and wool a are ro the most important in products shipped from this little station F for or many years black rock had the hie largest shearing shearin plant in the state slate ten tell thousand sheep were sheared in one day by hand this gave many men employment during the shearing season ovet over a million pounds of wool were shipped from here in one season our little school of which we are proud was established about forty five years ago the number enrolled in our school this year is ten black rock nock school is preparing a christmas christinas program consisting of two short plays songs poems and dances s robert kump ath grade black rock school |
