Show CANYON ROAD IN EXCELLENT CONDITION RANGER ItAN GEIl ROBINS WELL PLEASED WITH conditions FOUND 1 IN 14 CHALK CREEK CAVON CANYON tuesday forest ranger dort bert L robins returned from an inspection of tho the road up tip chalk crock creek canyon and satisfaction fairly beamed from his face ile ho stated that it was with a feeling of foreboding and a sinking heart that lie he decided to see just what amount of damage the extremely high waters of chalk creek were doing to the new canyon road on every hand lie he had heard remarks to the effect that tile tho road was probably not withstanding such a torrent of water very well and in as much as the stream Is the highest that it has been for or many years ranger robins admits that lie he tolt felt very apprehensive for the welfare of the road ills his very apparent satisfaction therefore is well excused in view of the report which he Is able to make ile he states that in not one spot has the new road been with water that in ili not one place have the rock abutments been damaged tile the slightest that there is not one bridge that will not carry tour four times the amount of water that is now go jug ang through it lie he states that in its lowest places there would have to be at least 50 per cent more water than is now coming down to do the road any damage hol well built ranger robins speaks very highly of the engineering of our road and mentioned our neighboring townsman lyman as doing very good work lie ile also mentioned the excellent work of martin hanson as a bridge constructor mr air robins telephoned the department today that he can put the road in excellent condition with twenty five dollars the only damage that it has from slides of 0 earth and andrack an drock rock from the hillsides hill sides above lie ile states that this side of tho the forest boundary the old rod and gun club road Is flooded but lie believes that it can call easily be fixed by one man in t two wo days chalk creek is undoubtedly the highest that it has been for years A recent measurement of the irrigation comp compney ilay showed that there Is second feet of water going to the fields and 25 second feet going into fillmore city making a total of second feet of water coming out 0 of t our canyons of the llie two forks tho the one up which the road Is built is the larger and mr air robins estimates that it la is at least a second foot stream this amount of water coming with the velocity that it does could coul id easily do much damage were it not for the tact fact that it carries very little sediment it the stream carried largo large amounts of gravel to first fill one and then another chat channel and larger rocks to continually batter abut ments and bridges it is very probable that the road would be very seriously damaged ranger robins sald that lie he became thirsty and it was not hot until after he had drunk 1 from the stream that lie he remembered that this was high water in chalk broke areke mr air robins stated that there are a few points and banks that are being washed into the stream and libat they could easily bo be fixed with a little rip rapping the greater part of the creek isebell protected with growth work ot of forest Se service ivice when we realize how muddy high water was just a few years ago or compare the water of some of our neighboring streams with our own we caff can well realize what fl wonderful ac accomplishment com our forest service Is effecting and then it if one should wish still further evidence of what can be done let them visit beautiful oak creeps creek canyon which was vas orace foul smelling and thick but which is now flowing a haun anu unu bu aai ably Y I 1 large stream which Is as clear A as a estal vs tal As clear d according to imager robins as dry creek which is one pur local cany canyons Is which never has flowed muddy iw water at q chalk creek watershed as a enol Is P in 0 n now aw but ait in view 6 of f what it ft has effected by bringing it up to its present standard the forest service Is invaluable even from the point of view of the man mail who grazes its ranges the forest feeds more cattle tar far better than it would have done without i regulation and t there liere is still room for great improvement creek water high chalk creek waier right this year Is probably the best bes chaat haat it has ever been in t ot of the creek the water ll 11 hag been high for several weeks now and gives promise 1 of continuing to flow low a good stream tor for perhaps a month yet it the weather continues continue i warm it la is expected expect ef that it will bo be its highest within a week had oot not the spring been exceptionally long drawn it Is IB doubtful it if th tb beater could havo have been handled |
