Show CHANGING TRENDS IN I 1 LIVESTOCK production revolutionary changes are taking place in the cattle business all the way from breeding operations on the range to the distribution ot of beet beef economic pressure ls Is ot of course responsible pon sible tor for the vast majority of 0 changes yet certain agencies who have pioneered projects resulting in more profitable operations should be credited with inaugurating policies which have since proven to be valuable A great deal has been written about the trend from the aged steer with the heavy beet beef carcass to the present day younger animals termed ia fa the trade as baby beet beef due to the fact that the range finishing of yearlings yearnings year lings is a rather difficult proposition the western country was slower to turn to the marketing ot at young cattle than in the middle west where dry feeds have been used tor for several generations it was about five years ago that the interests associated with tie the los angeles union stock yards start ed a progressive campaign to encourage the feeding and production of baby beet on oil the pacific coast the organization advocated the selection ot of well bred calves carefully selected from herds where good grade cows and pure bred registered bulls had bad been used and small farmers were encouraged and to some extent financed at the outset so that homegrown home grown feeds could be utilized and in order to provide home grown fertilizers to enrich the soil good grov thy young calves were taken directly from their mothers and placed on concentrated feeds animals weighing from to pounds proved to be tile the best feeders and to make the most profitable gains it developed that the pacific coast meat distributors found the to lb finished animals best suited tor for their trade requirements altho animals weighing ti up to 1000 coundi i s or better ordinarily received good attention from distributors A carcass which does not carry too much waste and kidney tats fats proved to be the most popular and under proper feeding methods the beet beef Is tender and delicious as the fat particles are well distributed through the loin lean meat i i like all pioneering efforts at the outset the project was fraught with with a great many complications some feeders attempted to put on the market anything from dairy breeds to very common beef breeds which in the nature of things would never produce baby beet beef meat ors who were unwilling to pay the additional cost per pound of real baby beef attempted to sell to their patrons common and ordinary meat from unfinished young stock taking advantage of the advertising and publicity accorded the baby beet beef campaign this proved to be one ot of the most difficult obstacles to the success of 0 the campaign but has been partly overcome through trade marking and stamping ot of carcasses there are now something like 10 baby beeves being fed ed in the territory tributary to the los angeles market an indication ot of the suc ess of 0 the campaign often those who attempt to feed baby beeves do not properly finish the calves unless the cattle dress cut at least 58 to 60 percent they can hardly come under the baby beet classification it means that it Is necessary to put real teed feed into the calves the higher the yield of good salable moat the more valuable the beet animal to the meat and ultimately through competitive buying the man who properly finishes his calves wil be paid accordingly ji j i aside from the value to the indus ln I 1 try in ili making beet more popular with the consumer the utilization at 0 home grown feeds fertilization ot of ate soil and building up a year round home supply of beet beef the campaign has been valuable in pointing the way to more profitable operations tor for the average range cattle feeder through the use of such supplemental feeds as cottonseed cake it has been proven profitable to market yearlings yearnings year lings and twos right oft off of green feed the use of this supplemental feed means that the cattle fatten quicker range feed Is conser conserved vedo and by putting cattle on the marlet market 30 days earlier ahead of the general marketing of grass fed cattle the individual operator is ablo able to mako make more noney moneys and wo are gradually getting away from burdensome sei seasonal receipts on the market |
