Show FARMERS alil URGED 10 ftc BEETS ARGUMENT ADVANCED THAT SUGAR SHOULD BE SUPPORTED generously CROP ROTATION TO LARGER EXTENT IN aa nv ISY ny by elmer eimer G peterson Po torson president agricultural college ol of ut special to the tribune Trl buno LOGAN april 15 there can be 10 no doubt ot of the wisdom of 0 tile tho farmers armora of utah and idaho deciding to ralso rats e a generous gene roua acreage ot of sugar beets this year aside from froin monetary return which may or may not be to the full satisfaction ot of either the companies or the growers the industry as such deserves di de nerves the support ot of every thought full citizen utah and idaho have too much nt at stake in this industry to per rolt to languish because ot of lack of abert it would bo be a one line thing tor for tho the or a it the future forgetting any di or which nifty may have existed to crowd these factories to capacity there is 1 no reason at this time for slag anything except the anfin I 1 once ot of a thriving sugar industry 11 upon P our whole economic life many farmers have told me that aside from the question 0 of profit they propose this year to put in as large an acre ace 0 of beets as possible dos sible in order to help restore the industry they say that even it if they lose money they will do this now whatever we may think of this attitude attl atti ludo tudo in other ways we cannot but pronounce it great citizenship iz worthy of a great state stata confidence expressed utah which Is distinguished by its ta spirit of cooperation has through its farm bureau committee and its company committee agreed upon a price for or beets this act bitsi I 1 sack f la is art an dt ot of confidence it is a eoon go jj to I 1 0 moi 1101 6 that this agreement Is id by ibi tb sentiment tonti ment ot of tho the taio there wo aio other aspects ot of the sugar bert beet situation which necessitate attention our distance from markets limits the th 0 crops wo we can grow profitably here dairy products we can produce in much larger quantity than at present hogs wo we con can produce as a supplement to our diversified farming largo hog raising enterprises as an business are matters or of individual attention and responsibility but a few ow more hogs at least on every general farm are arc practicable in ili the aggregate of course this would mean a continued COntin uW with certain fruits and garden truck but we are limited greatly to a concentrate con cent rat ad d product product such as meats sugar leoned stuff butter and cheese and such products with bulky crops we grow at considerable h hazard azard we need nore money crops and new crops wik be introduced in duo due time but it takes time to make them of state slate interest to train the tha growers develop the machinery perfect the special irrigation practice needed and develop the oth or cr processes required by each crop t assured we know how bow to grow sugar boots beets after two decades of practice we have the machinery tile the labor we know how to treat the soil we have an assured market this year for instance we may teed feed our potatoes to re floe hits and cattle no one knows the high prices pricer ot of lat year may as usually happens convert the growers j ct plant a large acreage 0 of potatoes it if the east cast does and the crop matures we may have a poor market tor for our potatoes ot of course just the reverse may occur no one with any regard tor for his future would dare predict a price for potatoes or any oth other e r such crop and that Is just the point that sugar beet gowers should remember crop rotation must be practised practiced to a tar far greater extent in utah and idalie idaho than has been done in the past the deplorable drop ra fral acre tonnage in some of our best valleys last year was due in ill measure to failure to rotate A giver acre can raise one crop successfully only po pong then ithen it must be refreshed by a chanse of crops sugar beets tit fit into our rotation admirably certain valleys have peas and other such crops but even in these valleys sugar beets cannot be sacrificed this is a strong reason why sugar beets should be raised even at a lowered profit sugar deenes desnes DeS Dee nes rela support there is a heavy loss of effort and money while we learn anything new the problem in agA agriculture culture as in all industry and with all ot of us this spring Is to get down to business with as little fussing around with new things as possible this coming summer will put us back to reasonable prosperity it if everybody gets to work at work he knows biow low to do now of all times Is no time tor for the idler tho the pessimist the aranki crank with new schemes or with some patent medicine remedy of government or economics economics good aldi fashioned work is what we need now on the part of 0 everybody so the sugar industry which Is equally ot of the farm er and the company deserves a heart lup support port we do not linow know but that the future will open for it gloriously glorious if of one thing we may be certain it can have no future without a generous support particularly this year |
