Show FLYING END LONG FLIGHT RECEIVE WILD APPLAUSE WHEN WORLD CIRCLING TRIP COMES TO END AT SEATTLE commander of ninth cor corps ps area represents president at great reception given fly flying ng members I 1 sand point field seattle wash the united states army aviators officially fici ally completed their flight around the world when they landed here early in the afternoon oi of september twenty eighth the world gird lers flew over the field at and after circling over lake washington amid the blowing of the whistles and the ringing of bells on the boats in the lake and the cheers of the thousands surrounding the field they again crossed the field preparatory to making their final landing of the tour that began in april three airplanes accompanied them to the field the conditions on land and aloft for the fliers were ideal at the landing field the sun was shining bri brightly gh aly as the airplanes came down and the weather was warm approaching pro aching sultriness one of the first to greet the three famous airmen and their three mechanics cabanies cs lieutenant leslie P arnold lieutenant john harding jr and lieutenant henry H ogden was major frederick L martin whose airplane met disaster in the aleutian islands A 4 family reunion took place on the field a few minutes after lieutenant arnold got out of his airplane ile he was hugged and kissed by his mother mra cora arnold and his sister mrs francis cole of spokane wash who had not seen him since he started on the flight that made history in aviation circles the fliers left eugene ore at 1001 a m on their last leg and passed over albany at 1025 a m salem was sighted at 1052 a m and the aviators were next sighted over portland at 1115 the he three world fliers landed at vancouver barracks wash a few minutes after leaving portland to make adjustments to lieutenant wades engine the fliers left vancouver at 1157 a m the airplanes on landing taxied in a large circle to the reviewing stand with the chicago at the left boston 11 II in the center and the new orleans at the right the bandi band in the meantime contin continued aed playing during the taxiing ropes were strung around the famous machines and the reception committee gathered to greet the fliers lieutenant smith stepped from the cockpit of his machine and made a short address to the assembled committee the crowd that gathered around the roped off airplanes was so great that the reception at the landing field was curtailed to merely a shaki shaking kg of hands of the fliers and expressions from the reception committee of glad you are ara here each of the fliers received at the field a large bouquet of dah dahil ilias lap which they took with them to a private luncheon aboard a yacht A huge welcome sign feet long spelled in letters twenty feet high greeted the aviators as they circled over sand point As the planes flew over seattle whistles and automobile horns sent up shrieking greetings on the field hundreds of automobiles whistles from scores of boats and yachts anchored on lake washington off sand point and cheers from the thousands of spectators contributed to the abi noisy return |
