Show Roads Good in Southern Part of State The Salt Lake Tribune printed the following report on road conditions in southern Utah last Monday: The roads in southern Utah, as a whole were never in better condition than they are at the present timo. The touring travel is heavier by over 100 per cent than ever before as a I result of the improved highways. Aj statistical report issued by the super-, intendent of Zion National park dat-j edi July 25, shows an increase of 11 Sj per cent over a year ago on the same! date. The service given touri-ts at Zion National park and Bryce canyon by the Union Pacific camps is tne. best, and far superior to what it has ben in past years. On account of these conditions southern Utah as a tourist center has made groat.-, strides this year than it has in all tin-past tin-past years sines these attractions wore first brought to the attention of the outside world. The above observations were gaiu e,l on a ten days' trip of The Tribune Overland Pathfinder gathering road data and inspecting touring con.lt-. Hons for the bom fit of readers o-The o-The Tribune. Many read changes have lvon made and now strip mans will give these charge; to the pub-; lie. Old roads have b-on improved, and these improvements will be shown Perhaps the great.-t .npi-improvement .npi-improvement In roads made this year is the opening of the Rockville-Fre-donia cut-off, connecting Zion canyon and the Grand canyon. The new bridge and road south or Rockville was opened to travel about two weeks ago- and a new strip map covering this route will be pubiisiied in Tnu Tribune next Sunday. The new route cuts the distance between these ti. points to fifty-nine miles, as againjt. a distance of ninety-one miles over the old roadi via Hurricane, a saving of thirty-two and seven-ienths miles. When one considers this saving is all poor roads, it is of more importance, j Perhaps the next improvement of importance is the recent opening of' the new highway east of Fredonitv for a distance of .seven miles. This1 section was the worst stretch of road between Salt Lake and the Grand canyon, and it;.-- completion leaves but one-half mile of really poor road be-! twden Fredonia and Bright AngtV Point. It was learned that further j new construction completing the highway from Fredonia to the Kai-, bub forest would start just as soon as the tourist season closes this fall. New work is also going on in Long valley between the Alton summit and Mount Carmel, which makes it necessary neces-sary to use the Johnson Canyoi. route into Kanab. The Johnson Can- yon route has. however, been drag-; god and is in good condition. The l'.lark Ridge north or Anderson's, is completed and open with the exception ex-ception of a very short detour arounr the new bridge which has not vol boon finished. Detours are also found on the Soipio hill, around Cove Fot and between Farowan and Cedar City, where now construction work-is work-is going on. Those are short and not in bad condition.
