Show Tijuana Has Costly Fire Tijuana, Mex. Fire starting in the kitchen of the Vernon club, a resort in this below-the-border drinking town, swept an entire block and caused caus-ed damage estimated at $1,000,000. The blaze, one of the most disastrous in Tijuana's history, destroyed the San Francisco cantina, the Trivoli bar, the Log Cabin safe, San Diego bar, Gonzales bar, Alhambra cafe, the Lower California Commercial company's com-pany's curio store and the Turf bar. During the early sweep of the fire the flames were fanned by a high wind, which hampered the efforts of the fire fighters. Tijuana's sole piece of fire apparatus a combination hose and chemical wagon, was powerless to save the blazing structures. Lack of water also hindered the work of those combating the blaze. A chemical wagon from Chula Vista, Cat., responded re-sponded to a call for help and aided in saving adjoining buildings. The wind died down about an hour and a half after the fire started, allowing firemen to get the blaze under control. con-trol. Had the breeze kept up it is believed the whole town would have been wiped out. |
