Show Dallas, Texas, A woman was elected governor of Texas, incom-j plete but representative returns from all parts of the state indicated early Wednesday. She is Mrs. Miriam A. Ferguson, a Democrat, who mode the race to vindicate the family name from the impeachment of her bus-band, bus-band, James K. Ferguson, when he wa$ governor several years ago. The reason she gave for being a candidate candi-date was that her husband was disqualified dis-qualified by the judgment of impeachment im-peachment and she only could enter the campaign. Although she had a lead which was incror-5:nff as returns came in, her Republican opponent, Dr. George C. Hutte. refused to concede Mrs. Ferguson's Fer-guson's election. Agencies tabulating the Texas vote reas-ed collecting returns shortly after midni; ht, Tuesday. The estimated vote was about 600,000, and about half of it was reported early today. Although many precincts were unheard un-heard from, the vote tabulated was considered by the Fergusons as as- suring her election. The figures from 1471 of the 4385 precincts in the state gave Ferguson 140,824; Butte, 104.683. |
