Show v U. OF U. NEWS BUREAU Dr. George Thomas, president of the University of Utah, in an ad-j-ess, given last week at the annual j meeting of the Utah State Federation Federa-tion of Women's clubs, clearly emphasized em-phasized the stand taken by the State ;: regard to research work During the course of his talk many instances were given where college research work was the foundation of some of the most important discoveries of the age, illustrating that such work should be encouraged in school. In his speech Dr. Thomas pointed out. the fact that research work, although al-though not possessing any spectacular spectacu-lar feature of largo bodies and' large buildings, is of very great value to the welfare and progress of the human hu-man race. It was brought out in his talk that teachers and instructors, although their r-aln concern is imparting im-parting the knowledge and experience experi-ence of the past, delight in spending some time in research work, attempting attempt-ing to find new truths to impart to their students, thus benefitting the world and creating a stimulus for rPo younger generation. According to Dr. Thomas, "if the world Is to nrogress we must have continually coming into an educational system a stream of new truth, pertaining to literature, art. science, and the material ma-terial application of the principles found. Otherwise civilization must reach a stationary position." The University of Utah promotes such work to the highest degree possible, pos-sible, realizing that not only Is the student and the instructor broadened, broaden-ed, but the world at large reaps untold un-told benefit. Graduate scholarships are given every year to encourage students to return to school and to study upon some research problem. Sabbatical leave is also given to instructors in-structors so that they may engage In study and research work to better fit them for their positions on the faculty. fac-ulty. ; a . . . |
