Show IN JUSTICE TO CHINA I - Disturbing news comes out of China. Antiforeign sentiment is reported re-ported to be growing. An American is killed, others are threatened, others insulted. Allied warships are forced to lay down a barrage to enable Americans to escape a captured city. The American flag is fired upon. All citizens are warned to evacuate in terior points and concentrate on the seaboard, where thousands of marines and bluejackets stand ready to defend them. Effective Russion propaganda is directed against all foreigners, Americans and British especially. Chinese mobs are inflamed to murderous mur-derous voilence. - j But reassuring news comes also. . Chiang Kaishek, brilliant young gen- j eralissimo of the Cantonese, Is found j to be defnitely an anticommunist. He dedicates himself to combating the : spread of communism within the , ranks of his own men, and swings , hi3 powerful influence against the ' bolshevik leaders in his party. Riot- 1 ers are summarily dealt with in I characteristic Chinese fashion. Well- ; informed students of China say that the country can never be turned to ! sovietism, for the Chinese are inherently in-herently opposed to such doctrines. 1 Neither the alarming nor the re assuring reports, however, tell the whole story. China is engaged in a, mighty struggle for nationalism. Not for generations has China been a na- i tion in the true sense of the word. Even under the Manchus real power was vested in satraps who ruled ths various provinces, and with the over- throw of the dynasty this power passed pass-ed to bloody bandit chiefs who still hold much of the land in their grip. In the struggle to overthrow these and weld the country into a nation, sharp weapons have been called into play. Russian aid has been ore ; weapon used by the nationalists; ! a.itif oreitrn propaganda another. In this they have erred; for while Americans Ameri-cans generally sympathize with the pure doctrine of nationalism, their sympathy has been alienated to a large extent by the extreme measures taken. America is the traditional ! friend of China. It still hopes to be. In justice to China, judgment should be withheld until the nationalists decide whether they want that friendship or not.
