MITTEE ASSIGNMENTS IN UPPER CHAMBERS Shipstead Given Place on Foreign Relations Body, Capital Learns; Others Await Appointment Washington, Congress reconvened Monday with the senate facing a reorganization re-organization fight and the house unable un-able to function because its committees commit-tees still are unorganized. Republican and Democrat leaders of the senate completed Sundr.y their assignments to the regular standing committee. At its final session Sunday the Republican Re-publican committee on committees is understood to have selected Senators Lenroot of Wisconsin, Willis of Ohio and Pepper of Pennsylvania for the three Republican vacancies on the foreign relations committee. This committee is to act upon President Harding's world court proposal, which has the indorsement of President. Coolidge. Senator Owen of Oklahoma is understood to have been selected by the Democrats for the fourtli minority vacancy on the committee the other three to be filled by Senators Sena-tors Robinson of Arkansas, the Democratic Dem-ocratic leader; Underwood of Alabama Ala-bama and Walsh of Montana. Senator Shipstead, Farmer-Labor-Minnesota, also was given a place on the foreign relations committee according ac-cording to reports. Senator Johnson of Minnesota was given the extra place created on the agriculture committee. com-mittee. The Republican committee on committees com-mittees confirmed the tentative assignments as-signments of Senators Gooding of Idaho, Couzens of Michigan, Howell of Nebraska and Fess of Ohio to the vacancies va-cancies on the interstate commerce committee. Selections for the four Republican, vacancies on the finance committee were Elkins of West Virginia, Mc-Cormick Mc-Cormick of Illinois, Ernest of Kentucky Ken-tucky and Stanfleld of Oregon. There were reports that Senator Spencer of Missouri had been placed on the judiciary committee .which deals with prohibition legislation. Senator Spencer has introduced a bill providing for the appointment of a committee which would determine-what determine-what alcoholic content of beverage waB in fact intoxicating. Democrats members of the house-ways house-ways and means committee made substantial progress Sunday in the selection of minority members for the other public committee, but the work was not completed. Present prospects are that it will be late in the week before either the Republican or Democratic selections are complted and the house probably will take another an-other three days' recess soon after it meets. Senate Democrats are prepared to present a motion for the senate to proceed with the election of a president presi-dent pro tem., but they still are undecided un-decided whether this motion will come before or after the senate has passed formally upon the makeup of its working committees. |
