Show "UTAH A TERMINAL . NOT A WAY-STATION" i i Above is the slogan adopted by the Scenic Highway association, and it is a good slogan. i Why should Utah be just a way-station way-station on the highway between Indianapolis and San Francisco? Why should be satisfied to just sell the autoist a quart of oil, a loaf of bread and then shove him off into the Great Salt Lake desert? Wrhy hurry him out of the state of natur al wonders, beautiful scenery and unlimited resources, into the state of real estate boomers, native sons and throwers of "the bull?" I Why not make an effort to keep him within our bounds, show him the wonders, the recourses and the. Mormon temple. Let him catch' trout, from our many mountain streams, shoot a deer, or help harvest har-vest a crop of alfalfa seed. Let him enjoy the cool summer evenings, or the bright winter days. Make his stay pleasant and he will not begrudge be-grudge the dollars spent in our midst Wish him a pleasant journey and he will return bringing others with htm. Adopt some California methods, but reject many. Be a booster, but not a grafter. Sell all you can, but give something for the money. Help all you can to make the tourist's stay here pleasant. "Make Utah a Terminal. Not a Way-Station." Why not? Utah has more to show the travelers than any other state in the Union. They say comparisons should not be made. I but as California has grabbed all the superlative adjectives, comparison compari-son is all that there is left for the remainder re-mainder of the United States. So in comparison let us see how Utah fares. California has the Yosemite; Utah Zion canyon. California boasts; the big trees Utah the Kaibab forest. California has Lake Tahoe; Utah; Puffer's lake, thousands of fee; higher than the California lake. California has Owens lake; Utah Salt Lake. California has her beaches; Utah Saltair. California has her China Town; Utah has none. But where, in California, can you find anything to compare to Bryce canyon or to Timpanogos cave; or where in the entire world, can you find the equal of Utah's natural bridges or Cedar breaks. The Grand canyon of the Colorado Utah shares with Arizona. California may have her old missions, 200 years old, but Utah has her cliff dwellers and her Mesa Verde 2000 years old, ruins which make the old missions look like play-houses. Let's tell the world of our won-i won-i clers and our resources. Let's show them to the traveler and let him tell j the world. Let's build roads into jUtah and 'make "Utah a Terminal, Vol a Way-Station." |
