Show CLOCK CHIMES Dou you know the chimes? Warner S. Hays, secretary of the Clock Manufacturers association of America gives the following as the original versions of the three popular chimes now heard from various American church belfrys: Westminister chimes, five bells "Lord, through the hour be Thou my guide "So by Thy prayer no foot shall slide." Wynchestre and Westminister chimes, seven bells "O Art Divine, exalted blessing "Each celestial cham expressing "Proudest gift the gods bestow "Sweetest 'chimes that mortals I know." Whittington chimes, nine bells "Turn again, Whittington "Lord Mayor of Londontown." "The Whittington chimes are probably prob-ably the most popular in America," said Mr. Hays. "They were first played on the Bow bells, the chimes of the Church of St. Mary Le Bow, at Cheapside, London in the fourteenth four-teenth century. Four hundreds of years chimes have been considered as peals of hope as well as time tellers and church time indicators, for the legend of the Whitting-ton chime; represents them as calling back to the city a discouraged boy, who, trying try-ing again, eventually became Mayor of London four times.
