Getting up to Investigate he found that the animal was frantic-ly frantic-ly trying to defend her pups from some ferocious enemy. Going back to the house Mr. Johns procured his gun and a lantern. Entering the barn and getting down to look into the opening in the dog house, his face was only a few IncheB from the nose of some animal In the box. His first thought was that a wild cat was Intruding upon the sanctity of the dog home. He was surprised to find when he flashed the lantern upon up-on the brute that it was a coyote. The pups were dead, lying about the box. The coyote was quickly shot to death. The brute had entered the barn door and passing behind the horses boldly made its way to the box where the dogs made their home and killed the pups, while the mother, moth-er, desperate, but vainly defended. Mr. Johns says that the pups were pure bred animals worth $25 each and that he has never before known of a coyote showing such boldness. |
