Show w "AMELIA PALACE" TO BE WRECKED Progress, marching relentlessly forward in its ordained duty of making mak-ing Salt Lake a greater city, is about to sweep aside another old and poetic po-etic landmark. The home of Col. and Mrs. Edwin F. Holmes, known as the Amelia Palace, South Temple and State streets, for years pointed out to tourists as the "houe of Brig-ham Brig-ham Young's favorite wife," is about to be torn down. The Gardo house, or as generally known, the Amelia Palace, was built by Brigham Young in 1875 for his wife. Amelia Folsom Young. After his death, Mrs. Young having gone East, the property reverted to the, Mormon church. It then became the residence of President John Taylor. During the strict enforcement of the antipolygamy act. President Taylor discarded the home and it was taken over by the United States Government and was for some time In charge of United States Marshal Nat M. Brigham. By a supreme court decision it was returned to the church, however, and became the official home of President Presi-dent Wilford Woodruff. It was transferred trans-ferred by him to Colonel Holmes, who later transferred it to Mrs. Holmes. |
