Show TIME TO PLAN FOR JULY 4th Is Beaver county going to have a Fourth of July celebra- tion? If she is the time to be- gin systematic preparations is at hand in fact, it's a trifle late. There is every reason for a rousing celebration this year, and Beaver county, first in re- cruiting for the great State of Utah, should not be behind in this matter of a fitting celebra- p tion of the anniversary of Am- erican independence and liber- ty. It is the Liberty of the World that now engages our young men in battle and they will win and set another and even greater date for future celebrations. But in the meantime a rousing celebration cele-bration should mark the Fourth of July, 1917, throughout the United States. It may be that a celebration entirely different from the old-time noise of firecrackers could be outlined out-lined by the proper committee on arrangements. ar-rangements. The News would suggest sug-gest as one feature a sharp-shooters' contest over a standard range of 200 yards or more. This would bring out the merits of the home guard and the marksmanship abilities of the registered men. Athletic contests foot races by men and the older boys, wrestling matches and contests con-tests of strength. A tug of war by the strong men of the county farmers against the town chaps or something like that. Anything that will tend to bring out the physical abilities or men and boys. The ladies need not be excluded either. It is not for the News to make the program, but we have the temerity to suggest that somebody get real busy at once on the proposition of a rousing celebration of the Fourth of July for Beaver county. How would a tug of war between Beaver and Milford draw, the winner win-ner to be the guests of the losers at out-of-doors barbecue, and banquet? "There are more men over six fee: tall and built well In proportion In this neck-o'-the-woods than any place we have ever been, and more old men with long grey whiskers than any place on earth," said a man to the editor a few days ago. If this is true it would indicate that this is a very healthful place in which to live and one in which athletic, contests should become not only popular but where records in them should be broken. How about it. Mayor Pitchforth. do we celebrate? and how about It. Mayor Frazer of Beaver, what say you? Or is it up to the officers of tho patriotic organizations to start the ball a-rollin'? |
