Show GREATEST OF ALL POWERS Wtalth, Anoeetry, Genius, nd Knowt. 'edge All Pale Before the Won. drous Magic of Beauty. The magic of beauty Is more potent 'than was that of Simon Magus or of l Paracelsus. Beauty Is a different thing from orrament, which may be the disguise dis-guise of ugliness. It Is a gift for which ' no artificial ttractlons can ever be a substitute. It is a power greater than ' birth, wealth, knowledge or genius. People may be proud of their birth, 1 but after all we are not our ancestors. The rich man may transmit his wealth to his offspring, but It may be all wasted In a single generation. Knowledge Knowl-edge may be a satisfaction to its possessor, pos-sessor, but has It not been said that "the more a man gaiueth of knowledge the more he galneth of sorrow?" Gen lus, although It wins admiration, may i be an obstacle rather than an aid to success In life. Burns and Poe and 'Baudelaire had genius, but It did not i bring them any worldly advantage. Beauty, on the contrary, is a key which opens all doors. It shines on the world like the sun, and Its Influence Is universal. In Emerson's words. It Is ""Its own excuse for being." To be 1 beautiful Is to be worshiped, idolized, . caressed, and adored. The plain, good people may protest against the Injustice Injus-tice of a world which prefers beauty to virtue. But the fact remains. IHochester Post Express. |
