On Saturday evening, a man enquired en-quired of the Marshal for the whereabouts where-abouts of a man named Gardner and upon the officer scrutinizing the stranger, he was struck with the similarity of the fellow's looks with a description of an alleged horse, thief, sent in from Richfield the same day. Upon being questioned by Baxter, the stranger disclaimed all knowledge knowl-edge of Richfield, but the Marshal was suspicious and had the fellow shadowed. Saturday, the man attempted at-tempted to leave town by the north, but Baxter took a machine and arrested ar-rested him, lodging him in the local bastlle as a suspect, and at once notified no-tified the Sevier county authorities. Later the officer went out to near the Heber Taylor property, and found a fifteen-year-old boy holding two horses and promptly arrested him, the boy claiming to have just come from Salt Lake. The arrests 'proved to be important, and Sheriff Christiansen of Richfield came over Monday and took the prisoners back to Sevier county with him. By questioning the prisoners, it appears that they must have left Richfield early Friday morning, arriving ar-riving here Saturday night, taking 'their time on the trip, apparently not being very apprehensive of capture. cap-ture. The boy, when arrested, claimed his name was Johnson, but later admitted this was false. His true name was not learned. The man gave the name of Betchtel or Bachtel. It was not learned to whom the horses belonged. Officer Baxter is entitled to considerable credit for the good use mide of his eyes and for his alertness in making the capture. |
