Show ! Pioneer Resident j ! Dies After Years j I Of Local Activity Mrs. Marearet Rebecca William;;, 83, widow of W. D. Williams, early Heaver county mining, smelter and hotel man, died Friday afternoon, after-noon, January 21, at the home of 'her daughter, Mrs. Eva Evans, of causes incident to age. A member of the Chri.-tian Science Sci-ence church, Mrs. Williams had long been a diligjnt and earnest member of the local Science church, and funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon af-ternoon by Harry Prout, Salt Lake City Science reader, a former resident of -Milford. Mrs. Delia Gray sang "That Wonderful Mother Mo-ther of Mine" as part of the ser- vice. Interment w-as in the Milford cemetery. A descendent of an early pioneer family, Mrs. Williams was born in Fillmore in September, 1857, a' daughter of Benjamin and Mar-' garet Mitchell Eldredge, pioneers ' from V'emont, who had lived in Beaver for a short time before settling in Fillmore. She was married to Mr. Williams in 1885, in Milford, where her family had moved the previous year. Mr. j Williams died in 1924. j Mr. and Mrs. Williams were leaders in the early growth and development of Milford, the former for-mer having- been active in mining in the San Francisco mining dis-, trict for many years, and operated a smelter in Milford on the site where stands the present high; school building. He and Mrs. Wil- liams were the wellknown and be-1 loved proprietors of the Williams! hotel, only lodging house in Mil-! ford prior to the arrival of the ' railroad. Their hotel was a center for stage service to many western j L'tah and eastern Nevada points . in the early days. Mrs. Williams w-as one of Mil- j ford's most admirable figures. To the present generation of Milford j residents she was widely known as one of the few remaining persons who had been a part of this city's dramatic beginnings. To her people went for historical facts and stories concerning early days in Milford. Surviving Mrs. Williams are one sen, John Mitchell Williams; one daughter, Mrs. Evans; and one grandson, John Moore Williams; all of Milford. |
