Subsequently the publications have given edi- j torial support to the campaign, also planning to encourage public support for the campaign to pro-! perly compensate lawmakers of : the state. i The constitutional amendment ; will be voted on at the general election next fall and currently appears well on the way to receiving re-ceiving public approval at that time. Under the present setup, as adopted by the constitutional convention con-vention in 1895, legislators are paid only four dollars a day for the 60 days which they serve during dur-ing the biennial regular session, plus an allowance of five cents a mile to the state capitol and return re-turn only once during such period of service. The arrangement permits per-mits receiving only four dollars a day for the 60 days, no additional pay being allowed during regular sessions if that period of time is exceeded. The same payment provisions pro-visions operate during a special session, senators and members of the state house of representatives receiving four dollars for each day of actual service. v |
