Show Scouts MakeTrip To High-up Mine We left Milford in Mr. Muncey's car and couldn't decide where to go for our hike as everyone was tired of Rock corral. Finally we decided de-cided to go to Griffith's springs, writes Raymond Feller, local Boy Scout patrol leader, in reporting a recent Scout trip supervised by J. E. Muneey, Union Pacific dispatcher. dispatch-er. After we got to Griffith's springs, Scout Feller continues, we thought we would like to see what was farther up the road, so we continued on a ways. Before long we wanted to see what was at the end of the road so we kept right on going. Finally Mr. Muncey said we had better not take the car any farher as it was boiling over and the road was getting steep. Chris Nolan said he'd bet we were on the road to the Honey Boy mine but, since none of us had ever been up there before, we weren't sure. Chuck Baxter, our senior patrol leader, had told us of spending a few days at this mine and we were all anxious to see what it was like. We got our packs from the car and started to walk up the road, single file. Glen Beard had a small pack and soon was away ahead of us, but we made him stop and wait for us to catch up. After walking about a mile, the road forked off to the left and a trail went to the right. We followed the trail and came to some cabins and found Chuck's tire tracks vso we decided we were at the Honey Boy mine. We each made a fire and pre-pai-ed our supper, such as it was. When it came time to eat, however, we discovered we all had forgotten to bring knives and forks that is all except Mr. Muncey. And did he tell us off! As you know, a Scout should "Be Prepared." After eating our supper, we hiked up the road to see where the mine was and at one point we could see all over the valley. We came across several tracks, some of deer and some we thought were cougars. After looking over the mine tunnel we hiked back to the car and drove home. We hope we can go again soon, Scout Feller concludes. |
