August .7 The controversy .between .be-tween the W F A and O P A over meat rationing has apparently resulted re-sulted in a compromise settlement W F A asked that point values be dropped on all "commercial" and "utility" grade beef. Now the news from Washington is to the effect that points will be waived on "utility" beef but retained on "commercial", effective August 13. This should provide a better outlet for beef from the medium and lower grade cattle and another an-other change in the government set-aside for military needs from 35 to 40 should prove a prop to the better kinds of cattle. Los Angeles cattle receipts the past week were somewhat lighter , than in the previous week while supplies at 12 leading market points were about the same as the week before and around 36,000 more than corresponding week a year ago. Demand for all slaughter cattle was fairly broad throughout the week and prices closed fully steady with the previous week, instances stronger on medium to good cows. Good to choice 1151 pound Utah steers topped at $16.75 and two loads of lighter weight Utah? brought $16.10. Medium to good grass and short-fed steers sold mainly at $13 to $15. Common to medium grass steers sold largely at $10.50 to $12.65, with some commoner com-moner grades down to $10 and under. A few good heifers sold at $13 to $14, but most grass offerings of-ferings trailed downward from $12.50. A load of strictly good Montana cows brought $13.60. A few other good cows sold around $12.50, with bulk of medium tr good descriptions $9 to $12, a few loads up to $12.35. Most canners sold at $5.50 to $8, some shells down to $5 aind below. Bulls firm with a few best heavies commanding command-ing $10.75 to $11.25; bulk common and medium kinds $8 to $10.50. ' Calves little changed with $12.50 to $15 taking medium to choioe kinds. Following recent advances to new 1944 price summits, there was some evening up in the hog market mar-ket the past week. Closing prici's were stetady to 25c lower on butchers, most of the loss on the inbetween kinds, while sows declined declin-ed 25c to 50c. Feeder pigs were strong, ranging if to a peak of $15 on good, well bred kinds. Ceiling tops of $15.75 on good and choice butcher hogs weighing 210 pounds and under and $15 on weights above 210 pounds were maintained. Sows clearpd mostly at $12 to $12.75, with a few smooth kinds up to $13. Lambs displayed a weaker undertone. Some good northern California spring lambs sold at $14 to $14.25. Quality and condition con-dition considered these were comparable com-parable to lambs selling at the recent high of $14.50 to $15. A few best ewes reached $0 to $6.50. Some common ewes sold at $3 to $3.50. |
