Show THE RUSSIA OF TODAY Russia, with her great empire, is almost as much an enigma as is China but in quite a different. way. China is content to remain stationary, but Russia has conducted the most daring experiment in government that the world has known in a century. Throwing off the yoke of a despot monarchy, mon-archy, she jumped into the depths of communism and dares to try every experiment that this system could prescribe. Again the world sees her in the process of throwing off the yoke of communism and emerging as a new republic. A new constitution has been framed. A constitution which provides for two houses of parliament, universal suffrage for men and women over 18, a secret ballot, freedom of the press, freedom of speech and free education. Some socialistic features are retained but for a country that has gone through the changes that Russia has gone through in twenty years this is remarkable progress. There is something in mankind everywhere that causes him to love justice arid hate tyranny, that makes him strive for that surrounding that will permit him to enjoy the fruits of individual efforts and individual endeavor and enterpi'ise. It is not idle to think that Russia, with her vast resources, her potential man power, her sturdy ability to survive devastating changes may yet become the power of Europe with which other nations "will have to reckon. o |
