Show Draft Deferments Will Be Reviewed The cases of thousands of draft registrants who have been deferred de-ferred because of their jobs were ordered reopened Tuesday. Tn accordance with re c e n t amendments to the draft law, selective se-lective service issued instructions for reviewing the occupational deferments de-ferments of all registrants whose principal places of employment and loov'l boards are in different appeal board ara.s. . The reviews will be made by appeals boards hrtjing' jurisdiction over the registrant's reg-istrant's place of employment. For example, if a' man works in Washington and lives in Virginia or Maryland and has been granted deferment in his home area, his case must be reviewed by the appeal ap-peal board of the District of Oolumbia. Fifty thousand such cases will be reviewed by the District Dis-trict of Columbia board alone. The regulation is designed to provide a tighter check on deferments. de-ferments. For instance, a man registered in Texas and working ir New York might obtain a deferment de-ferment by mail and have it upheld up-held by a Texisi's appeals board, by mail also. Under the new plan, the appeals board in New York has the authority to check that i mli'n's actual essentiality on the scene. The regulation does not require j review when the pi-incipal place of : employment and the local board pre in the same appeal area. (Selective service officials em" phasi&e that apyeals are still to be j filed through the locia'l board with which a man is registered. The board will forward the deferment plea to the proper appeal body. IT |
