Show DEWEY'S IDEA OF RESPONSIBILITY Governor Thomas E. Dewey has signed six bills designed ! to reduce or eliminate juvenile delinquency. He is "trying to' do a good job as governor" and letting his acts and policies speak for themselves. The main bill sets up a temporary youth commission for the state, with an appropriation to coordinate and, conduct activities to determine and diminish causes of youthful criminality. crimi-nality. The commission of seven members includes state commissioners of correction, of education, of mental hygiene, of social welfare and of industry with one from the parole board and a special representative of the executive. Other measures provide for locally managed recreation projects; youth agencies for development of their own schemes; parole procedures and segregation of older offenders offend-ers from the more youthful ; classification of accused children chil-dren according to mentality, environment and other contributing contri-buting causes of delinquency. In still another law the social welfare department is authorized to find homes for children deprived of such influences. Finally permission is given the social welfare commission to set up temporary branches of its three institutions investigation, classification and reformation. re-formation.
