Show TIME WASTERS TP T F HAT I the University is primarily a workshop and not a convenient ent place for foolish and demoralizing waste of valuable time seems to have been forgotten by the misguided students too many manyin in number who have been able to find no better occupation on this campus than gambling in its lowest form fonn For some soma time a number of prominent students many of them freshmen have gathered on the lawns for the purpose of shooting craps Men have a v whole hole days day's program of classes to follow feverishly the vagaries of a pair of rolling dice The game gaIne has not been one of pure pleasure either since rumors have filtered through the mass of bystanders that no inconsiderable sums of money have changed hands daily It seems a sacrilege to waste vaste the bright summer sunshine in the lowest sort of gambling If the library the class rooms the laboratories laboratories laboratories labora labora- tories and the athletic fields must fall second to a practice that is against the laws of the state as well of the college just for what purpose purpose purpose pur pur- pose do the players attend the University If students wish vish to squander the best hours of their lives they may at least do so in a decent manner Members of the student body as well veIl as faculty members have expressed their deprecation of gambling on the campus and those who play but flatter themselves in the belief that they are regarded as heroes by the great majority of those who vho at attend attend attend at- at tend the institution Just a word as to smoking on the campus The officials in charge of the University have seen fit to prohibit the use of tobacco within the confines of the school The rule should be respected if for no other reason than that it exists The man who cannot wait vait until he gets off the campus before lighting a cigarette is nothing more or less than a drug fiend and has no business here Freshmen whom we know now think it a great coupe to smoke on the campus without getting caught They even go so far as to say The president passed right by me today I thought sure he would catch me Ine They have yet to learn that the institution is to a great extent a gathering of equals and that there are no policeman who sneak about the greensward in the hope of catching doing something forbidden by the rules |
