Show YOUNG MAN GETS LIFESENTENCE Jack Beard, 31, who pleaded guilty to second degree murder for killing Clyde Watson last June, was sentenced sen-tenced to a term of life imprisonment imprison-ment by Judge J. W. McKinney in the third district court at Salt Lake last Saturday. Cline, Wilson and Cline, with S. A. King of Salt Lake as associate council, represented the defendant. "Thank you, Judge," said Beard, when I he court pronounced sentence. Beard was originally charged with first degree murder, but through stipulation of counsel, he was per-nlittod per-nlittod to plead guilty to a second degree murder charge. Although Beard fired four bullets into the body of Miss Clara Charles-worth Charles-worth on the oceosion when he murdered mur-dered Watson, he was not prosecuted for this action. Testimony at the preliminary hearing indicated that Beard was employed at a restaurant where Miss Charlesworth also worked. He had boon friendly with Miss Charles-worth Charles-worth and on the night that the shooting occurred, expected her to return to the restaurant before he finished his shift. When she did not appear, lie obtained an automatic pistol and waited at her apartment, 2'2i' East Broadway, until she arrived with Watson. Upon firing the fatal shots, Beard fled and was captured about six weeks ago in Washington. o |
