C and Detachment Men Swear Allegiance to Flag in inI I Impressive Ceremony Y On Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock I the first assembly of the S. S A. A T. T C. C and other students of the University y was held The swearing of the oath of allegiance and the ceremonies in connection therewith took up the entire entire en en- tire time Col Edmund S. S Wright was in charge and the ceremonies were most impressive At the same time similar ceremonies took place at aL five hundred other colleges throughout the United States when other college college col col- col lege men took tooh the same oath A The battalion the draft draftees es first and then the new S S. S A A. A T. T C. C men passed in review and formed in front of the Park building Bishop Joseph S S. S Glass then offered the invocation after which the oath of allegiance was ad ad- ministered ed by Col Wright While the themen themen I Imen men stood with bared heads and right hands raised they repeated after Colonel Colo Colo- Colonel nel Wright the words of the pledge I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all Then while the band played the Star Star Spangled Banner Danner the recruits standing standing standing stand stand- ing with bared heads and the officers and soldiers at salute the flag was raised Colonel Wright read the general general general gen gen- eral orders of the day which included ed a brief resume of the governments government's reasons for having the men take this training and nd outlining its desires in inthis inthis inthis this respect The colonel al also o read letters from Chief of Staff Peyton C. C March and Acting Secretary of War Val Benedict Crowell In his letter to the members of the S S. S A A. A T T. C C. I son and in which the president im impressed impressed im- im pressed upon the men the deep significance significance signi signi- of the step they had just taken After Professor ProCessor Paul had read the message from the president President Emeritus Joseph T. T Kingsbury of the University addressed the students He Impressed upon them the Importance of the work they were undertaking anti am the necessity for downing m min in order to insure e the thA future welfare and happiness of the world Following President Emeritus Kingsbury's Kingsbury's Kingsbury's Kings- Kings burys bury's address a short recess was taken During the recess draftees gave some some delightful entertainment in inthe inthe inthe the way of snappy and patriotic war songs which were well wen l' l received Especially Especially Es Es- pleasing wa was ne Ge singing of a quartet composed of members of the draftees unit at the University Their songs were generously applauded and it was with genuine approval that the news that they would sing soon again was received 1 Following this the battalion was called to attention and short addresses were given by Governor Acting-Governor of Utah Harden Bennion and Colonel Freeman C.
