Show CATES WRITES The following is a letter from W. C. Cates, called to our attention this week. We are printing parts of it, as ' friends of the Cates family will be interested in hearing from them. McCloud, Calif., Dec. 7th, 1929. Dr. Addison Bybee, I Milford Utah. ' My dear Doctor: , Guess it's about time I wrote you, so I'll put in a few moments writing. writ-ing. Have been going about with Kendall thru the "bay" sections of California nnd have been fairly occu- 1 pied taking in most of the towns. It j has been most delightful weather for California, not so very foggy and while the natives say it's cold mornings, morn-ings, I fancy it's rather "unusual" weather. I feel the clammy stuff tho. Sun don't snap like it does in our, country. Yesterday we started north over his territory which ends near; the Oregon line. It was a delightful i trip over fine roads and up the Sac-1 ramento Rivir. Canyon was beauti- 1 f til, but oh, so dry. Everything burn-! .id up, no grass anywhere, no rain.j t o snow, ar.d the prayers, cusses and i v.hat-not of the citizens must make' the w-ather man nervous. Am now: at McCh ud. nt the foot of Mt. Shan-' I I and we'll be here over Sunday. It j :- one teg lumber camp and a whop- ; it, re- ting i:i the big pines at Shas- j t is font. Very pretty country. When; t hi vai.iiali.m of man has not de-1 .rovei ti e f.ireits, in the interest of i". !: "ry (?) nnd progress (?). It' ii'.u l i.ae K-.-n a conceited ass, that recounted the Creator's making of man and pronouncing the job "good." ! These rocks and stately pines, to me beat anything I La . f the-bi ped order so f: l . McCloud is surely a r-V.j.v. own, all owned by the Compary. a'! V-'"-es, stores, hotel, school, anvjst me;. I ha 's, etc., owned by Company. Streets paved pav-ed but all else wood, side walks, miils, hotels, school, churches, all wood. Even Ev-en the trees wood, and am told some wooden heads amongs its citizens. But it's a clean town in every way, orderly and wholesome lot of people, so unlike the usual mining or industrial indus-trial camp. The company seems to plan to just break even on its public enterprises. Shasta is surely stately old pile, with good growth of whiskers up to timber line, from whence it's bald, rock head sticks up for several thousand thou-sand feet. The "oldest inhabitant" has not seen it so devoid of snow. Just a little spot here and there on its wrinkled face, where it usually simmers in glistening white, particularly particu-larly this season of year. We will go north Monday and then go south to Tacoma. I'll take boat on 18th for Long Beach and spend Xmas- with the Cates gang, when we will all be together for first time since we were j still under the parental roof. Hope the winter is not too severe and that there is plenty of sickness i of a curable nature going on. See cattle market still poor. These poor j farmers out here in pitiful way. No j feed for stock. Said to be kr.-cking new born lambs on head. Fruit not I budding properly on account of drouth. Kinde.-t regards and best wishes to Mrs. Byliee, Dill and family, together with all other "flatters," in which Kendall joins. Merry Xmas to alL Sincerely, "W. C." |
