Show MOFFAT RAILROAD WANTS MORE UINTAH BASIN BUSLNESS The Xloffat road is going to reach out after Uintah basin business. F. J. Toner, general freight and passenger pas-senger agent of the road, and A. P. ! Jackson of the White Motor com- pany made an extended trip through I the basin last week. "The plan looks feasible," Mr. Jackson said to a Craig Empire reporter re-porter on his return- to the latter I town. "The Uintah basin territory-is territory-is absolutely at a standstill as the result of the lack of transportation. Its agricultural products cannot be marketed. Practically all the products pro-ducts consumed In Vernal, Roosevelt, and Myton are now brought in at great expense by parcel post.'' The Uintah Valley railroad company com-pany Is planning to discontinue its freight and passenger truck line from Watson in order that It may devote de-vote all its facilities to the transportation transpor-tation of gilsonie. The next nearest railroad point is Price, 129 miles away. The United States government govern-ment is now operating a truck fleet to carry pracel post from Price to Vernal. It is figured that the 135-mile haul from Vernal to Craig will.be much cheaper than the haul from Price to Vernal. Messrs. Toner and Jackson met with the combined commercial and civic organizations of Vernal, Roosevelt and Myton Monday and learned first hand the conditions in that section. Right at this time th valley is ready to begin shipping quantities of honey, dairy products, poultry and eggs, fresh and smoked meats, vegetables and fruits to Craig for shipment over the Moffat road. Mr. Jackson estimates that when the line Is in operation at least 600 gallons of cream a full truck load will be shipped from Vernal each -day. He also says that a million pounds of Utah wool will come to Craig each year. : XIr. Jackson states that the highway high-way between Craig and Vernal is really better than he expected and la in good shape for a truck route. A f " fast car can now make the trip ia five hours and he anticipates no difficulty dif-ficulty in running trucks on an eight-hour daily schedule. New two-ton White trucks, wita five-ton engines, would be installed on the Craig-Vernal run. At first only two trucks would be used, one leaving Vernal each day and another leaving Craig, carrying both passengers passen-gers and express. As the business increased, more trucks would be put in commision In order that all the business might be handled, Steamboat Steam-boat Pilot. , |
