Show I I I STRAWBERRY ROAD Editor My Dayton Myton ton Free Pee Press Pre My Myton ton Utah Dear Sir Some day there will be constructed construct construct- ed a hard surfaced highway leading from rom the Uintah basin to points west and the cost of such a highway will willbe willbe willbe be great A good portion of the money mone expended ex- ex ended for the tho construction of oC this highway will be spent in the grading grading grad- grad ing ng and preparation of the base upon which the hard surface will rest This being the case caso would it not be wise to take stock right now of or the advantages and disadvantages of the different routes that will he be considered consid ered eyed when the time comes for building build build- in ing ng our permanent highway There are re several very important factors to o be considered when making this location and they can be considered now Just as well wen as a few years hence ence The first and most niost Important point is to select a route that will serve erve tho the greatest number of ot people with the minimum outlay of or money The e second point to consider would be e the relation of the proposed road to o highway systems already con can and improved The third ana anao I. I I I I I i I by y no means means the the least important point to be considered would be the probability of blockades from snow The he fourth factor to consider would concern the tho future usefulness of the route oute that is whether or not the advent of oC a railroad into the basin would change the direction and nature nature nat- nat ure re of travel in such a manner a as aso asto to o practically preclude the possibility of f a road constructed at a great cost Continued on Page rage Eight STRA STRAWBERRY ROAD Continued from rom Page Five serving the purpose for which it was built bunt Applying these factors actors to the situ situation situation atlon as it now exists it will be found that of ot all the roads leading west from the basin the road known wn as the Strawberry road will alone fit the specifications In the first place the Strawberry road will serve the entire basin east of Duchesne as well wen as as a large and prosperous community west of the same town The Helper road leaves out the Fruitland section entirely The objective point of oC all persons traveling west in automobiles is now and always alwa's will be Salt Lake Lalee City and it is natural to make the supposition supposition supposition sup sup- position that travelers wish to get getto getto getto to theft their destination In as short a time as possible and at the same time timo travel with comfort Here again the Strawberry road has the over o the Helper road for the distance distance distance dis dis- tance from Dayton Myton to Salt Lake City is more than 40 miles less Jess by the first named route It connects up with a splendid id road already built and which will always be a main traveled highway high way and has hes many scenic scenia advantages not possessed by the Helper route The altitude of Daniels Daniel's pass the summit of orthe the Strawberry road Is ve very y much lower than the summit on the Helper road and It Is reason reasonable able abo to to believe that the snow fall fallis is is not so heavy The Helper road is at the present time the shortest route to the railroad and is serving a very useful purpose but with the necessity of reaching railroad facilities a thing of the past people of ot the basin will be e but little concerned with the question of a quick passage out and will vill travel the road offering the advantage of bring them to their destination which as has been remarked remarked remarked re re- re- re marked before will be Salt Lake City in the shortest time The building of oC a railroad into the basin will stirn stimulate stimulate travel over the Strawberry route and will be he the cause canse of HI the practical abandonment of the Helper road Since the Strawberry road I traverses a National forest it is Just Justas as much entitled to Federal road funds as the Helper road and ever every effort should be made now to have havo havethe tho the proper Forest service officials give what aid they can If this road t bo he properly located and graded now it will provide a fo foundation n for tor the road that is to come como and will offer otTer u u. compacted foundation base that can bo ho surfaced for a minimum outlay out out- la lay There was an n article in one of the tho newspapers published in the basin stating that there would be some day dar daya dara a concrete highway from Vernal to Helper This stylo of road while most excellent would break such a a. sparsely settled community as we live in to build since a road of con crete creto costs anywhere from to per mile in localities where cement and labor are very cheap Wo We haYe ln the basin unlimited unlimited un limited q quantities of rock asphalt and low grade which can be bo had for the asking and which if ft properly applied will make some of the best surfaced hard-surfaced roads in the state This Thi type of road can be maintained as cheap or cheaper than a concrete roadway and otTers offers all aU the advantages of the more expensive expensive expensive sive The traffic over out oui roads has even now now reached reached th the the- point where a dirt road no matter how well wen constructed and maintained will not stand up and we must look for tor something better Crushed stone atone roads fail when subjected to automobile traffic for tor the reason that the rapidly moving tires of the cars cara tear up the fine particles of ot stone that bind the larger stones The cost of maintaining a crushed stone road averages s per mile mUe per year while a road surfaced with asphalt can be maintained for 50 per mile per year rear The difference in cost of ot is the interest at 6 so that there Is no question of the econom economy of constructing the road with an asphalt binder Very truly yours D.
