IN AND AROUND DELTA The Week's News from the Coming Meropolis Things have been very busy around here of late. L'verybody Is working bard to get all -the work done that they an while we are having such good weather. Last Monday quite a bunch of men and teams gathered at the hall to help with the work of excavating for the boiler house preparatory to putting put-ting in the new steam heating plant. The boiler house will bo Just back of the hall and will have main heating pipes running through the concrete floor of the rooms of the basement, ami tip to the radiators on the main floor. Mr. John W. Thurston of Morgnu was In town the first part of the week. He came- down with more land buyers. Jack Is a hustler and wo are glad to see him working for our county. coun-ty. This Is his second trip and he has sold over n section of land. Dr. Dryden of Modena was up here last week and disposed of his (Mark Ft root property to S. W. Kccics. The same week Mr. F.ccles sold It to our new blacksmith. Last Saturday night the Delta Junior basketball team played a match game with the Millard Stake Academy First Year team. The game was a good one from start to finish, and ended with a victory of 32 to 31 in favor of the home team. The line-up was as fol lows: First Years. L. Abraham, r. f.; Clete Larson, I. f.; It. The commendable plays that were made were as follows:' Stott, 11 field and o foul throws, making 27 points; Larson, 2 field throws, which made their complete more. Gardner and Hillings both made 6 field and 2 foul throws each. Humphries made 1 field and 2 foul throws, which made the 32 points for Delta. 7'he boys of both teams played a good game and especially the work of Koch to hold down his man, not a single score, as their r. f. man was the one they mostly feared. Dr. Murphy has got only his first Installment of furniture for the Arcade Ar-cade Furnishing House, but will soon have a complete up-to-date stock. A furniture store is a much needed acquisition ac-quisition for this section. Attorey Melville was down from Salit Iake City last Sunday. Prof. It. U. Lyman was down from the City this week on business pertaining pertain-ing to the county road from here to Fillmore. We have another new railroad agent again. Mr. McRwan being called Into Salt Lake City, and Mr. W. H. Hawes taking his place. Last week David It. Stevens of Holden was in town and while here he disposed of his lots Just east of N. 8. Bishop's place, the one with the well on was purchased by Arthur Gull of Fillmore, and the one with the big red barn, to Kdwln F. Illshop of Hinckley. The sale prices were $4.10 and $r.00 respectively. Mrs. J. Wlnterrose and sons are among the new comers to Delta. They are from Heber, where Mrs. Wlnterrose has been In the millinery business for the past eight years. Her sons have taken up a farm at Delta and Mrs. Wlnterrose has opened a millinery shop in J. H. Riding's building. build-ing. She can't make much of a show where she Is, but will soon be In a fine cement block building of her own Just west of her present location. She also does dressmaking. If you want to buy any Delta prop erty you had better buy It now, as the price of land is going up every day. The lands of the Delta Company that have heretofore been o, ft, and I'.c, have all been raised $" per acre, and it Is expected that another raise will take place by the firnt of the year. A new alfalfa Duller has Just been shipped here for use in threshing the alfalfa seed across the river. It is for the Pa) son people, who are threshing In Abraham this season. Hunker Soren n have had their machine in town the last week thresh Ing out the small Jobs b-re while wait , ing on the oats on the west side, as all of the farmers had not got all their crops harvested. Mr. O. II. Lackyard made a trip to Salt Lake City last week to order the paints for the new hotel. W. H. Denlson, the local plasterer, will start the plastering on the new hotel soon. He expects to do It tip in very short order. If Delta keeps growing like It is at the present time It will not bo long till it will be the largest town In the county. coun-ty. People are coming here from everywhere. It is very seldom that a day passes that Delta does not add one or more people to her population. People Peo-ple are coming from other towns In covered wagons, bringing their belongings belong-ings with them. They all seem to know a good thing when they see it, as they are all coming here. Potatoes are selling for $1.00 per bushel now and are bard to get at that price. We hope that by another year we will raise plenty for our own wants and will not have to pay such extortionate prices for them. Commenting on the new calendars which R. J. Law has got for his customers cus-tomers this season we wish to say that they are a long ways ahead of anything that we have over seen around this locality. Work is being pushed on the enlarging en-larging of the canal as fast as possible. pos-sible. The engineers are working early and late doing the surveying and team work will start some time nbo it the latter part of this week. The railroad strike has de'layed Arthur Humphries" shipment of lumber, lum-ber, but by the time this reaches our readers the Deitu Lumber Co. will probably have received four carloads of lumber, shingles and plaster. Others will soon follow until the yard is completely stocked. Roy S. Dresser has gone into the horse business with Al Searls. They have bought up twenty-three brands of horses running the range and expect ex-pect to gather In several hundred head Jtli iei winter, Their first Camp is at Clear Lake, and they expect to move over on the river In a few days. J, M. Ashby, County Superintendent of Schools, was in Delta last week, and expects to visit most of the school of the county during the next two weeks. The school at Clear Lake started up October 16 with Mary Peterson of Fillmore as teacher, and with 60 pupils. W. J. Ioeke Is a canny Scotchman who has been in Canada, the northwest, north-west, Mexico and South America, and finds Delta good enough for him. He has taken up 80 acres In West Delta, Just north of the Abraham canal and Is putting up a house to live in. He has made a good start this fall with 20 acres of fine looking rye. The Hunker boys seem to know all about farming in Millard county. We don't think any of them have made a failure. Take C. T. Hunker, for instance, in-stance, over on sections 3 and 4, north : of the Abraham canal. A year ago this summer this land was in grease wood and this fall he has harvested 2.357 bushels of wheat and has got a ' nice stand of alfalfa started. He also I raised the finest lot of xtatoea you i can see anywhere. A bunch of about fifteen land buy- 1 era came into Delta last Saturday and ' Sunday to look over the prospects 1 here. They were mostly I'tah people. I They think this country Is all right J and the majority will Invest. ' Two of our honorable county com- 1 mlssioners, Mr. Geo. Nixon of Holden and Kdw. Hushnell of Meadow, were 1 In Delta Sunday. Mr. Nixon and Hush- ' nell ordered some improvements made 1 in connection with our Jail here. They 1 also Instructed Constable Soren 1. Tay- 1 lor to see that anyone guilty of breaking break-ing the law and sentenced to serve a term of Imprisonment be locked up. 1 The writer had quite an extended talk with the county commissioners. 1 and they assured him that they would ! only be too glad to help the people ' of Delta in any way that lay within their lKiwer. The writer asked them ' what became of our petition that we sent some time ago asking to grant us a town incorporation, and they answered: an-swered: "We granted your petition, and If you haven't heard from it, then the fault lies with the county clerk." They further s'.atod that the clerk had been sick, and they thought that was the reason ip hadn't heard from him, but that they would see that it was attended to at once. You ought to get a draw on the big candy raffle at A C. Sorenson store. It is by far the bet raffle that has ever come In to the town, and every draw gets a prite.
