Show Chatter Box Dear Suzy He who laughs last laughs best bestor best best- or he who laughs last is an EnglIshman Eng Eng- lishman lIshman- or he who laughs last just laughs and laughs laughs- and so it itIs itis itis is with Killer Kirk as he is having the last laugh I As you remember Killer was one of the bow and arrow addicts that took off for the Oak City hills Monday morning He had been admonished admonished ad- ad admonished chided kidded and there was concern about him becomIng becoming becoming becom becom- ing lost again Anyway after all this he your guessed it was the only one to come home Monday I with a deer neatly punctured by byan byan an arrow from his bow The others r f came home with plenty of stories stories' and reports of seeing plenty of deer but none close enough to skewer i But the rest are all still at it and hopes are high that they will bring home some venison as with I the high price of meat they can pay for their bows and arrows and possibly the time spent practicing practicing practicing ing by getting a deer Speaking of deer reminds me of the deer hunters dance and that thatis thatis is something I would prefer to forget forget forget for for- get and it would be better to forI forget forget for for- I i get it as I cant can't remember anything anything any any- thing since Wednesday night at 7 Thre are hundreds of others in my predicament and the thought resolves itself to wonderIng wondering wondering wonder wonder- ing if the deer hunt is really worth all the effort of buying groceries packing a car shoeing a horse and i getting all ready for the hunt and then going to the dance and the next day getting out of a sick bed going to the hills for 2 or 3 days of strenuous hiking It is a good thing that the sport Is pursued mainly be men as it leaves roughly 50 per cent of the population still on its feet teet after the hunt is over with the others suffering from rom everything everything ev ev- from a hangover to in ingrown IngrOwn ingrown In- In grown toe nails It Is also a very good thing that this particular two weeks of festivities festivities festivities fes fes- and such comes but once a year as there are not many in these parts who have the rugged nature to withstand the rigorous life Nobe Peterson local hotel man and of new cars cars ars opened his mouth a few tew times too often orten last week and thereby hangs a story Nobe had discussed long and loudly his nephew Rulon Callister Callister Callister Callis- Callis ter says Nobe doesn't use the phone for local calls he just stands on the hotel steps and whispers the Inadequacy and hearted half-hearted manner in which our town was night watched by the officers of the law and anyone who had tough ear drums was a victim of his And so comes in the mornIng mornIng morning morn- morn Ing and Nobe Is awakened from peaceful slumber by a of the night bell in the hotel He wrapped a robe about him and went out hoping It was a custom custom- er Instead it was Cordell Edwards one of the strong arms of the law hereabouts who told Nobe he was just checking up and wanted Nobe to know he was on the Job The next night at the same thing happened and Nobe got to thinking m maybe he had been In error and especially on the third night when Cordell breezed in the hotel and routed Nobe out to tell him he was still on the job and hoped that Nobe felt safe and secure se- se secure secure se se- cure in fn his cozy haven At this point Nobe felt maybe maybethe maybethe the law was working too hard on the job and so the next day looked Cor Cordell ell up and told him he would like to call an armistice and that h he e wasn't concerned if someone walked off with the days receipts of the hotel but he was concerned about being awakened up every morning at And so all is peace and quiet Nobe isn't being waked up any more nor is he sayIng sayIng saying say- say Ing that the city is being neglected neglect neglect- ed by the law after dark Which goes to show that those who live in hotels shouldn't complain complain complain com com- plain about the law at least the local law Well there is one very nice thing about the deer hunt hunt hunt- it keeps the themen themen themen men out from under foot for a few days at least They now have a chance to see what its it's like to plan the meals do the cooking but knowing deer hunters like I do I know they will never wash the dishes They just set them out for forthe forthe forthe the squirrels and the birds to clean up Toots |
