Show HOPI INDIAN BUILDINGS Scientists have determined that tha Hop! Indian buildings of many of tit Tillages of the tribe northeast of Blag staff, Ariz., date back to about 1620, when the Hopls revolted against the Spanish priests and tore down missions mis-sions built by the Spaniards, using many timbers from the missions In constructing their own houses. A party Including Dr. A. E. Douglas of the University of Arizona and Dr. J. A. Jeancon of the Colorado State museum recently visited the Hopl pueblo villages, where they made a study of the wooden beams In the ancient an-cient structures. Professor Douglas has specialized In the study of rings in Arizona trees with the result that be has been able to determine the age ef timbers. The scientists' principal prin-cipal difficulty lay In securing tbe per mission" of the Indians to make borings bor-ings In the beams, which are held acred by the Hopls. When this per mission was finally obtained a number num-ber of one-Inch borings were made and the examination indicated that the beams had been cut about the year 1620, when tradition says the Spanish built their missions In northeastern Arizona. Some 60 years later came the Hopl revolt and the missions were torn down. Many of the beams Is the Indian dwellings are decorated with rich carvings, which Doctor Douglas says are Wie work of the Span-lards. |
