Show A Book Review Acoma the Sky City by Sedgwick I ThIs This book gives the interesting history of oC the Indian pueblo of Acoma in New Mexico in very readable readable readable read read- able form its valiant defense against the Spanish conquistadores and and its final surrender its part partin in the rebellion of 1680 the building building building build build- ing of the Catholic church there thereat thereat at untold labor and especially the rites and customs and religion of the inhabitants so isolated from usual white man contact as to be preserved better than in those Indian Indian In In- dian wan communities more frequently I visited The author is free to say that she adds no great amount of in inI information information in- in formation from her own labors but I that she has gathered from allI all I sources every scrap 0 of f information In f orma t. t Ion I others had written and presents the many scattered references in one complete volume It is a good book on the subject interestingly written full of information information information mation and a valuable addition to anyone's library She gives the ceremonials ample space and explains them nicely the book is divided into two main parts the parts the History of the pueblo and in Part II the Legends and so social social social so- so cial organization In this section she draws on results of inquiry in other pueblos making application wherever it will fit it thus giving a abroad abroad abroad broad groundwork for study of pu- pu people in general and of the Inhabitants of Acoma in parti parti- cular culM The Tate The book is well illustrated The editor of this newspaper spent a day in Acoma ate lunch in an Indian home saw pottery makers at work and purchased and has on display in his cases in the theoffice theoffice theoffice office a good example of their ware he took many pictures while there and made lantern slides of them His reception by the Indians was kindly free from constraint and he thoroughly enjoyed the visit visit visit vis vis- vis- vis it and adds much to a better understanding understanding understanding un un- un- un of the pueblo and Its people By the way when the writer was there in 1929 his Indian host said that Acoma had been continuously inhabited for over years years years-as as he stated it the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States Truly Truly the Sky City for it is built on a mesa top of oC feet height I |
