' A travelling salesman drove up '4 behind a farmer's wagon, which was being drawn by two mules. De-ijjj! De-ijjj! ciding to have some fun, the sales- ;! man began honking his horn fur- A iously. The mules soon bacame jit- 1 tery, and the farmer waved a ii warning to the salesman. But he kept right on honking as hard as he could until the mules finally broke and ran. They crashed into a billboard bill-board and both of them were in- Could a Drunken Driver Be Arrested Before Pulling Away From the Curb? A tipsy gentleman staggered out of a night club, climbed into his car, and started the motor. But before he could shift into low gear, a policeman rushed up and arrested him. Tried on a charge of "operating "opera-ting a vehicle while intoxicated," the man protested that he -hadn't actually driven at all. But the court held him guilty anyhow. The judge said that just starting the motor was enough reason for the law to step in and prevent further trouble. May a Policeman Collect Damages if He Shoots Himself by Mistake? A policeman went to the depot one night to board a train. The entrance en-trance ramp was not well lighted, and the officer didn't notice a cart which had been thoughtlessly left there by a depot employe. Sure enough, he tripped over the cart. As he fell, the impact touched off the trigger of his pistol and he ; I Jured fatally. When the matter was taken to court, the judge failed to see anything funny in the salesman's sales-man's little joke and made him i pay for the farmer's loss. The judge felt he should have had more consideration for the mules' nervous ner-vous systems! !A certain rich man was grief-stricken grief-stricken by the death of his only son. He decided to draw up a will, leaving a large trust fund to his son's young widow. However, he added a proviso that the money should be cut off in case the young woman ever remarried. After the man's death, she went to court to have this proviso declared null and void. She argued that it wasn't fair to force her to remain single j for the rest of her life. However, the court ruled that th will was perfectly legal, t - -- - shot himself in the legl Although not seriously wounded, he later brought a damage suit against the railroad and the court granted his claim. The judge figured that, even though he had shot himself, it was really the railroad man's negligence negli-gence that had started the unhappy chain of events. |
