Show Frost Fears Rise As Alfalfa Seed Harvest Goes On West Millard alfalfa seed growers grow-ers are in the throes of the annual an-nual apprehension of September frosts as the alfalfa seed goes into in-to the burr. First crops are safely threshed, and in the bag, and some second crops. But many of the fields of second crops need more time to ripen. With a harvest anticipated of around 6 million lbs. frost is definitely unwelcome. Cooperating with the U. S.' Weather Wea-ther department in Salt Lake City for the second year, the Chronicle relays a daily forecast. Local weather wea-ther observors make their reports to Salt Lake early each morning, and about 10 a. m. a forecast is wired back, based on readings at the Salt Lake bureau. Call the Chronicle, at 731, when you wish the daily forecast. Monday the first message read, "Mostly clear, Minimum as Deser-et Deser-et near 32. Rather general frost in bottom lands. Light wind." That speeded up considerable cutting in the area although many decided to wait. Mr. Eberhardt, and another official, of-ficial, from the Salt Lake Weather bureau, visited the Deseret bureau Monday afternoon to inspect equip ment. They found a tiny bubble in the minimum thermometer, which had caused readings of 4 degrees colder than it actually was. They installed a new thermometer. ther-mometer. After calling Salt Lake, they made another forecast, of 34 or 35 degrees in the Deseret area. RAIN RAISES MERCURY Sometime after midnight, a surprise sur-prise rainstorm hit the area, with a recorded .08 precipitation. That lifted the frost threat for the time being, and minimum temperature temper-ature that night was 45. Tuesday forcast read " Party Cloudy. Few showers and thunder storms. Minbmum temp, at Deseret near 46, with a light wind" Maximum Max-imum temperatures both Monday and Tuesday were 76. Tuesday night the minimum reading was 38 WEDNESDAY FORECAST The forecast Wednesday is "Mostly clear. Minumum at Deseret Des-eret near 38 with light winds." That's the weather picture . as the Chronicle goes to press. We hope that next week continues the same story, of temperatures well above 32. In the meantime, the Chronicle will continue passing on the daily bulletins. And if any frost warning comes, they will ring as many farms as possible. |
