Show An Unwarranted Criticism No 1 little criticism has been een directed at the Opi Opinion ion printed recently i in in the Chronicle concerning the Student Employment Em Em- Employment ploy l ment Bureau and the failure of its director to pro provide ide part- part time ime work for many of the applicants T The te author of the article a U U student has been disappointed disappointed disappointed pointed no doubt in procuring work vork through this agency and n has s taken the free voice column of the Chronicle to express his feelings on the subject However we ve feel that he has has' failed t tiri to tomake iri make inake ke a complete investigation of the Bureau and activities activities' He is greatly mistaken when he states that the Bureau director is making only hearted half-hearted efforts to place university th then men n. n President-Emeritus President Kingsbury was placed at the head of r the Employment Bureau for a specific reason i i. i e e. e that because because bec be be- c cause use of his esteemed reputation in Salt Lake City as past president of the University of Utah he lie could be very instrumental instrumental mental in providing work for students Dr Kingsbury makes P personal visits to Salt Lake business houses day after day in inor or order er to fulfill the purpose of his position He has made call after call upon the civic clubs of the community to aid him And nd the high degree of success which the Bureau has reached in i l past years is exemplary of his sincere efforts But now about this year Most surely it has been difficult difficult difficult cult to find student employment when one stops to consider r that there are approximately men employed only part t time in Salt Lake City and between and unemployed unemployed men in in this county alone The business depression which has swept the country has not left Salt Lake untouched It has created armies annies of unemployed men and many of these men have sons attending the university Although the depression depression depression depres depres- sion has diminished the ranks of collegians by killing the source of financial aid from parents it has also increased the ranks even more by forcing young men to attend school because employment emS employment em em- S was impossible to find Paradoxical as this statement may seem it has been borne out by research conducted by some of the largest universities universities' in the country whose professors were startled to find increased enrollment despite decreased finances With rith these facts in mind it is not hard to see why the Student Employment Bureau is having a tough time of it lien ren with families first the civic clubs say It is just a matter now n w won on the part of unemployed students to buckle down an and d accept any kind of work when it is available instead of assuming the Ill take what I want when you find it attitude which has dominated so many students who have applied at the Bureau fu |
