Show A Treasured Relic Of Ye Olden Tymes Carl Warner, of D. Stevens store in Delta, has a relic of the past which is beyond price. It is a muzzle muz-zle loading, six-shot, old time pistol pist-ol made by Spang r Wallace in the very early days of pistols in the United States. On the top of the ancient gun is the engraved name: I. V. Carling, U. T. Who was the brother of Carl's granddad. The gun weighs an ounce or two less than four pounds; it is an all day chore to even hold the piece out at arms length. The overall over-all length is 17-34ths inches, and the barrel, from the cylinder to the tip is 11 inches long. In the butt is a little door to a receptacle for holding the caps. One screw taken out, a slight turn of the parts, and Lo!! Disassembly is achieved, and the gun came apart. The barrel is very thick. It is the most ancient firearm I have ever had in my hands. I do not know the date as yet, and will make inquiry through some source to find out when it was. manufactured. manufac-tured. The gun has been well kept, and although the trigger guard is gone, and also the muzzle loading lever on the bottom of the barrel is missing, still it will cock, and hasn't lost any of its impressive ness as a formidable weapon of death. Carl can not explain away, but I think his grandad's brother was really Captain Kidd, and that this ancient arm was one of the pirate crew's gat, and boarded many a vessel, with much swag, in 'Spanish Pieces of Eight,' and as I look at the old weapon I expect to see a peg-legged pirate with a patch over his eye climbing over the gunwale. The old relic is priceless. It is on exhibit in our case. Come in and look at it. |
