Show pruning t f peach tree 1 I rom t tarm arm is s hi the texas experiment station has put out a bulletin on the pruning nt of the peach the experiments were made and the bulletin wl itten by prof U R II 11 price As the principles of 0 pruning are the same everywhere we believe we ae can do no better than to gine the substance ot of this bulletin in the following article pruning la is the operation of taking cl oft undesirable branches the form of top should be 1 decided upon before the orchard Is set and be strictly adhered to afterwards atter warda nearly all the ugly and anti poorly formed tope top of peach or chadds are largely due either to nee neg lect elect or to training to some ideal almost wholly un to the habit of the trees such orchards are often fall fail ures peaches develop from buds that are formed the previous year and nearly all of them occur on the previous loua years growth of wood hence nearly all the peach crop can ba destroyed destro etl by cut I 1 on one year old learh tree heavily pruning back the young branches bran choe after groh for the year Is completed we C u take a ivan alvan tite tae ot of this fact when pruning the peach tree an I 1 thin tha the fruit at tho the same time sometimes a late frost might come and destroy another lare large per cent ot of the fruit buds ahlis lessening lee BenIng the fruit crop to an undue proportion where late frosts ar ara liable to occur and the orchards are small so that they can be pruned in a short time it may be ad disable not ti to prune ok off the youns young limbs until after the fruit crop Is set act if it the ends of the limbs are not headed bark back the vie fruit will be borne furtha away a ay from the trunk of the tree each succeeding year the limbs i will become long and angling the weight of the fruit on the ada ot of the long limbs will cause them to droop and frequently break or ut off if it the fruit Is 1 not off from them many varieties will overbear one year I 1 and so exhaust the tres that chev arc i not apt to bear the next year such orchards are liable to fruit eiery other ear during the heavy fruit year an avei overloaded loaded tree will make but I 1 little fi wb bmw 3 if 7 jut ut 2 ayoun young tree As A it came from N nursery ursery cut 3 att tr plum 1 and neady tor for orl chard weed growth on which to bear the tol fol lowing year cut 1 I shows a peach tree that haa has had one year years a growth without prun arun ing it will be seen that the top was formed near the ground the tree has made a low bushy busby growth A num her of peach trees were grown tor for several years without pruning and they maintain this form ot of top during their entire growth hence this form was adopted with very satisfactory re suits since these orchards cime into bearing they have not tailed failed ID in single peach crop in cut 2 Is shown a peach tree bought irom from a large nursery durl during g the tall fall of 1900 it Is an average peach tree as it coa cours 9 af to the tle grower fk 1 m cut t j yung rree alting set in orchard from the fierY it ie Is long and elender slender with only a few limb limbs nor near the top the lower side branched branches were alt all crowded cut by the trees that grew cloe close by the of it the topcoat br bran anthes diee on such a tree when let met out would grew grow but little tor for several year years the crown of 0 the iree would be started in no definite place the limbs would likely be entered all along vp up aba trunk trual the growth ot of limbs would likely be te uneven an ani I 1 it would be dif ficula to mahe make the top assume a desirable form afterwards hence the top ie Is cut back to about 18 incha as shown in cut 3 it the tree Is I 1 two years ol 01 I 1 or ie is an overgrown one year old tree the hide side buile buds are so latent that th the branche branches may come out irrea thie this form can usually be cor reefed by pruning properly pru perly attert arda ards the difficulty is not likely to be met with if it one avar earold ear old rather email small trees are selected in cut 4 1 I ie Is shown this IN cut 6 5 elret wa bours growth being set in the orchard I 1 it f the gers go were would request the nurseryman to prune off at least halt half the top before shipping it be a great baying ot of wrapping material and cost ot of transportation in cut 5 Is 1 shown a tree after one year a growth grow th it baa his made a rather undesirable top it waa was a largo large one year tree when set out in the orchard there la Is ample room however tor for a wise choice in selecting the place tor for the crown on this tree the lower loer limbs have bae made much more laore vigorous growth than the upper ones on this recount account the point tor for the crown on this tree should ba be selected as low 1011 down aa as possible in cut b Is shown the same tree utter after pruning the limbs will throw out many side branches next year because they are not shaded by other limbs above aboe them branches on the lett left ot of the tree at a are apt to make the most rapid growth since they III not be chided much by any other limbs them to the amateur this severe pruning cut after I 1 art tear a growth of the young tree may seem hazardous but tha th peach tree III stand an im menso mense amount of pruning plums and cherries for south dakota A newspaper bulletin from the south dakota station at brookings recommends the following on northern native plum roots desoto wolf forest garden alcher hawkeye Ilaw keye for trial olion olson stoddard the cb cherries erries recommended are early richmond english morello Os estherin therin farmers in south dakota intending to set out cherry and plum trees will do well to write to tho the ei station for advice prof N E hansen of brookings has the following to say on root kill ing I 1 common source of trouble la Is the of the tender roots or stocks upon which apple plum ii cad id cherry trees are grafter or budded la in the nurseries trees should b protect cd ed by a mulch or layer or stable litter spread on the ground for several feet out beyond the branches this prevents trouble from root killing cult cultivate the mulch into the cioll during the growing season at least la in young or chadds to prevent drawing the roots wo 1 near the surface if plum tree trees arc are on our northern cort bern native plum roots no trouble cepl be feared from root killing if it the fall la Is dry a heavy soaking ct cz the root roots with water Is a great help before mulching as it prevents drying out during the winter if it we were always sure of a heavy now snow this watering would not be necessary when buying tree trees an illinois orchard let says rays when you wish to start an orchard go to the nearest nurseryman have ron eon flrence in who growa grows the tres him self not onn one who purchases pur haies chajes hom oth ers the latter I 1 do not riot c ll II a it nurseryman he Is a tree merchant do not go to a nurseryman who advertises a great many high priced novelties or on general principles it is safe to let him alone almost every person who has written an sin article on fruit growing haa has warned you against the tree peddler still this warold Is eo so little heeded it seems necessary to sound the alarm all the time do not buy ol 01 any agent unless you knew him to be b all right and the agent of come me reliable nursery nine times out of tn tin money paid to these un k kno agents Is worse than thrown away evet eve T farm firm should be to ane extent a experiment station though it cannot the work being done by the station by the government ern ment but it Is not rot foible poe elble for a i farmer to kitow jut just what varieties varl etlee c certain kinds of at crops will rill do bet best on his land without trying a number this Is spee lally true of cropf that vary quite generally in their varieties |
