Show fowl F 0 v I 1 was a hybrid A hybrid fowl the offspring of a wild english pheasant cock and a guinea hen recently died on a farm near palatine N J A hybrid of this kind ihlae hile not unknown among abden eifle men is quite rare aud aad very fet fe persons have ever seen one the circumstances cu cum stances of its birth and life are interesting mr william harris living near elmer had a flock of guineas in the spring of 1900 these guineas had the range of the farm on which was a fringe of timber mr harris and his men noticed an english pheasant phea tant at times in this strip of woods and on a few occasions when nhen tho guineas ranged near the woods the pheasant mingled with them but he never came near the tho house after this flock of guineas had hail laid a number of eggs a neighbor jacob dubols dubois bought of mr harris a setting of eggs which were duly placed in a nest under a brooding hen now in all well uell regulated guinea families tho the period of incubation is four weeks but to the astonishment of air harris ono one of the eggs hatched in three weeks tho the little chick was presented ed to mrs lizzie smith it early exhibited its wild parentage and its instinct taught it self preservation when quite oung it showed surprising alertness some of the family would try zo 0 o catch it carefully placing the hand over it until its back was almost touched then quick as a flash it was away I 1 the fowl fed and ranged with the othe othet farm fon fowls Is and when N hen fully ma aured deigned seven pounds its appearance pe arance was not unlike that ot a chicken except that its legs logs resembled those of a turkey it had remarkable strength and in a few minutes could scratch a hole deep enough to bury it self in it never neer met a snake without Alt hout giving and winning battle |
