"Jim," as ho will henceforth bo known, Is now domiciled at tho Cincinnati zoological gardens, where he Is carefully guarded from wintry winds and cold conditions. To make It possible for you to look upon his picture here, Jim's parents bnd a hard time bringing him Into the world. Ills mother sat for three weeks upon tho egg from which ho was hatched. After she had laid this egg and three, others In a hollow tree, the father plnstcred up, tho entrance to tho nest with mud, leaving only n small holo through which ho. could feed the mother whllo sitting on the eggs nnd for two weeks more whUo tho young birds grew up. This Is the precaution these birds take against monkeys discovering the nest and killing kill-ing the mother, destroying the eggs and young birds. After tho young are two weeks old, the hard-baked mud Is poked away by the parent birds nnd tho young lenvo the nest and nro guarded closely by tho old birds for a week longer, when they nre ready to take chances and shift for themselves. Their food consists of vegetation and small reptiles. They grow to tho, slro of a vulture. Their long, powerful bill Is a dangerous weapon and makes the bird a hard one to capture. |
