Paul Jones, bishop of tho Utah dloces of tho Episcopal church at a Socialist mooting In Unity hall Tuesday evening, even-ing, at which he crltMscd the war preparation program of the President and tho patriotic sentiments express ed at tho Tabernacle mass meeting Monday night, were disavowed at a Bpeclal meeting of tho vestry of St. Mark's cathedral of the Episcopal church of Utah held yesterday afternoon after-noon in the office of J. Walcott Thompson In tho Continental Dank building. Over tho signature of twelve members mem-bers of the vestry, headed by tho Very Uev. William W. Fleetwood, dean of tho cathedral, the attitude of thoso of tho Episcopal faith in the state prepared In a resolution, may bo summed up in a sentence from a pastoral letter of the whole house of bishops of the Episcopal church of October, 101G, which i3: "God hates a godless and empty peace as I much as lie hates an unrighteous I war." When local members of the Episcopal Epis-copal church had read newspaper accounts ac-counts of the speech of Bishop Jones before the Socialist meeting, arrangements arrange-ments were made for the calling of a meeting of the cathedral vestry. Mr. Thompson, who Is the junior warden of the 4VCBtry and as such called the meeting, explained last night that primarily the appearance of Bishop Jones before tho Socialist meeting should bo regarded from the individual standpoint and that his remarks should not be received as the sentiment of the Episcopal church. |
