Show U. S. PREPARES TO HURRY SHIP BUILDING WORK WASHINGTON, Oct. 28. With tho first lap of Its race to renew the world's shipping supply before German Ger-man submarines cut It to shreds finished, fin-ished, tho United States shipping board girded Its loins for the second sec-ond and last lap. Almost all of the contracts for vessels hare been lot, Chairman Edwin N. Hurley announced, an-nounced, and the board will now lend all Its energies toward getting these contracts carried out properly. Enough shipping has been contracted contract-ed for, It Is believed, to carry America Am-erica and the allies through to victory, vic-tory, desplto submarine ravages past and present. Three definite propositions propo-sitions wero specified: 1. Tho selection of a strong staff of shipbuilding experts to act as assistants as-sistants to Admiral Capps. 2. Tho calling In of all lumber men working directly and Indirectly on ship construction for Monday. 3. Tho calling of all steel shipbuilders ship-builders on tl'io Atlantic coast for Wednesday. Tho aim of these three moves, Chairman Hurloy mado clear, Is to produco speed In turning out ships. Thero Is no possibility of Admiral Capps resigning, as was Intimated in somo quarters. Chairman Hurloy refused to discuss criticism of tho ship building program by Lord Northcllffo. Next week's two big conferences will bo tho first steps toward spood- Ing up. Tho lumber mon on Monday will moot with Chairman Hurley and Admiral Capps and their respective respec-tive staffs to go over every phaso of tho lumbor situation. Mr. Hurloy said that ho hoped to arrange a plan whereby tho lumbor men could rush their contribution! to tho ship building process by tho I means, of special through trains.
