Show r. i H' ; j UNDER WHICH FLAG? H' ' In commenting on the Zimmerman note the New York H "Herald asks all German-Americans the above question "Under "Which Flag?" B v The once pro-German New York Evening Mail comes , 'forth with the command, "Choose, You, This Day Whom B i You Shall Serve," and proceeds as follows: B The Zimmerman note has taught a terrible les- H ! j son to German-Americans, and one that they will ( B never forget. B It has taught them what an ominous conflict of B interests might arise between the country in which fl they were born and the country to which they owe B -allegiance. B They have learned that every country looks out B for its own interests, and its own interests alone. B They have learned that the country of their B -dreams, of their cradle-songs and childhood, pro- fl poses a plan to strike us at our weakest point, to B ' turn loose the bandits of Mexico and the hordes of B the East, and continue fighting with them until we B are forced to cede to Mexico the States of New B Mexico, Arizona, and Texas and to Japan wev H laiow not how much more. B Therewith German-Americans learn the last B -wholesome lesson that need be taught them. |
