Knapp ot tho Indian service. In addition to the selling of poyoto, tho Indian, who Is a full-blooded full-blooded Sioux from North Dakota, is wanted on a chargo of murder in that state and tor the alleged sale ot Intoxicating liquors to the Indians. He was arrested near Fort Duchosno and lodged In Jail at Grand Junction Causing tho Ute Indians to believe i that eating tho alkaloid drug known as poyote, which comes from tho plains of Texas and Mexico, was tho only way by which Indians could at- J tain salvation, a number of Indians havo been reaping rich profits, and nB a result tho Ute Indians havo become be-come addicted to the use of the drug Tribal relations became strained, the poyoto-users constituting on faction fac-tion and tho non-usors tho othor. The superstitious Indians believed that poyote was a dlvtno gift, while othors believed It was a drug. I For moro than five years the Indian Ind-ian agonts and state officials have attempted at-tempted to stop tho use of peyote, but the religious sentiment attending attend-ing Its use has always Interfered to the extent that Indians wonld never give Information in regard to tho pur veyor ot tho drug. After a search which lasted many months, Phelps was suspected. The evidence secured secur-ed by tho foderal authorities resulted result-ed In his arrest yesterday. Tho use of peyote was introduced among the Utes by a renegado Indian from tho southwest and tho trado was established by tho -Digger Indian of Texas. For a number of years the drug has been administered by those who preached religious doctrines, and tho greater number ot the users thought they woro doing n service to their deity through tho uso of the drug.
