Trlna, daughter of old Caplno, a cobbler, lives next door. She is very fond of Joe and Is much rellevod when she learns that Joe's "sweetheart" who arrives from Italy, Is none other than his ltttlo old "Mamma Mia," his mother. Godfrey Kelland, district attorney, Is a candldato for tho governorship, and Joe's sympathies and efforts are enlisted In his behalf. Tho Weasel, a notorious crook, Is arrested ns he seeks refuge' in Joe's house, and suspicions su-spicions are cast upon Mamma Mia. Just at this timo Mrs. Kelland loses a diamond which Is discovered In Mamma Mla's possession. Baby Kelland has placed tho pin In the basket of clothes which Mamma Mia la to wash and sho Is found "guilty" and sentenced to two years In the penitentiary. In tho meantime, Joe and his mother havo witnessed an attempt upon Kolland's life and assisted as-sisted him, but nevertheless Kelland Is very vigorous In IiIb prosecution of Mamma Mia. A little lator Mrs. Kelland discovers tho baby putting another piece of Jewelry In tho basket bas-ket and sho decides that Joe's mother Is Innocent. Two crooks from tho gang dotorm-ino dotorm-ino to put a stop to Kelland's activities activi-ties and to "plant" a golf ball filled with nitro-glycerlno so that Kelland will bo thrown up as by an unknown accident. They play upon Joe's feelings feel-ings and Induce him to placo tho ball. Just as Kelland Is about to strike tho ball, Mrs. Kelland and Trlna come Into tho grounds, and to savo them Joe takes tho blow upon his own body. Joe's aonfosslon that tho ball was Intended for him Incites Kolland's anger, but Mrs. Kolland's story of tho baby's Innocent part In tho tragody, and her pleadings, soften soft-en tho politician's heart.
