Show R0AD8 ARE MADE TOO WIDE? Western Roadways Are From Fifty to Sixty Feet In Width. Much of Space Grown to Weeds It is argued that as a general thing and partlcularly'in the west, the roads of tho United "States are too wide. Tho weet and Germany are compared In this respect. It Is pointed out that while Germany, where the traffic is enormous, the highways are but twenty twen-ty and 21 feet, In tho west, where traffic Is comparatively light and land worth 100 an acre, the roadways are from fifty to sixty feet in width, three fourths of which grows up in weeds and grass. It can hardly be said, howover, that tho roads aro too wldo In the eastern states. Mountain travelers, especially, especial-ly, will smllo nt tho Idea of wldo roads In readiness of tho subject, having many times and oft met face to faco other travelers far from tho wldo place, with tho result that their vehicles ve-hicles had to bo taken apart and carried car-ried by pcacemeal or stood 'up nt ' h dizzy anglo against tho cliff while tho other hugged the perilous edgo of a fathomless ravlno. |
