Show TILLABLE LAND IN THE U. S. Over Eleven Hundred Million Acres, According To the Department Of Agriculture Washington, Jan. 17. Preliminary estimates by the department of agriculture agri-culture show that ot tho 1,140,000,000 acres of tillable land la the United States only 27 per cent is actually under cultivation. The estimates wero based on reports of 35,000 correspondents cor-respondents scattered In every Btate. The country, excluding Its possessions contains about 1,900,000,000 acres ot which about 60 per cent Is tillable. This Includes land already under cultivation cul-tivation or which may bo brought under un-der cultivation by clearing, drainage, Irrigation, etc. Only 19 per cent or 390,000,000 acres was estimated to be, of no uso for ngrlculture, either now or In the futuro; 19 per cent, or 31,-000,000 31,-000,000 acres, Is non-tillable, but valuable val-uable for pasture or fruits. According to the census of 1909 tho land area In crop3 whero acreage was given was 311,000,000 ares. This Is approximately 16 per cent of tho total land area or about 27 per cent of tho estimated potential tillable area. In other words, says tho department, depart-ment, for every 100 acres that are now tilled about 375 ncres may bo tilled when tho country is fully developed. |
